Table Of Contents

Hemorrhoids happen due to swollen veins in parts of the lower rectum. The condition leads to pain, discomfort, and bleeding during defecation. Thencondition is commonly termed piles and has two types – internal hemorrhoids and external hemorrhoids. Out of the two, the external hemorrhoids cause pain.

The Minimally Invasive Procedure for Hemorrhoids (MIPH) is an innovative procedure that came into practice in 1995. The procedure is done in patients with hemorrhoids in the distal rectal mucosa and submucosa.

Instead of direct excision of the anal mucosa or the hemorrhoidal tissue, the procedure involves the removal of excessive or loose prolapse mucosa and submucosa developing in the patient’s rectum. It also involves direct stapling of the end-to-end mucosa anastomosis.

What is the procedure of MIPH?

Also known as Stapled Hemorrhoidopexy, MIPH is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. It induces fewer risks of pain and complications with a quicker recovery period.

The surgeon uses a circular stapler for MIPH wherein the sharp ends remove the ring of tissue that covers the anal canal. The successful excision of the tissue restricts and stops the blood supply to the enlarged veins, thereby shrinking them in size.

After removing the tissue ring, the area is stapled to hold the adhering tissue in place and prevent further risks of developing hemorrhoids in the future.

Recovery after MIPH

The introduction of MIPH for hemorrhoid surgery has made treatments a lot more accessible and pain-free.

Patients undergoing MIPH are often discharged the same day after a few hours of recovery. Since it doesn’t require dressing, patients can resume their daily activities within 4-5 days after the surgery.

If the state of your hemorrhoids requires immediate surgery, we’d recommend looking into MIPH as a primary choice. It is a lot more advanced and helps with better symptom management in the future.

Compared to conventional hemorrhoidectomy surgery, MIPH is more refined and has a quicker recovery rate. The standard procedure can take around 4-5 weeks for complete recovery with frequent dressing changes to prevent infections.

MIPH offers quicker recovery with reduced pain and often doesn’t require any hospital stay.

What are the risks associated with MIPH?

Despite being minimally invasive, MIPH comes with its fair share of complications. However, the risks depend on the surgeon you are consulting and the kind of expertise and experience in the field.

Ideally, a well-experienced surgeon will ensure that the procedure is done safely and without notable complications. However, being aware of the possible risks is important too. Some of the notable ones include:

  • Hemorrhage
  • Anal stenosis
  • Sepsis
  • Fistula
  • Infections
  • Urinary incontinence

These are some of the most common complications. But, they aren’t a standard consequence but a rare occurrence in some cases.
